Born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and an American father and growing up between continents, Eugene Tzigane developed an early affinity with both the elegance of Japanese aesthetics and the dynamism of Western musical traditions. His multicultural roots continue to shape his unique artistic identity— one that is guided by 19th-century European and Zen aesthetics that yields a deeply intuitive and organic approach and an embrace of the beauty of imperfection.
Tzigane studied at The Juilliard School under the guidance of Maestro James DePreist, graduating with a Master of Music in orchestral conducting in 2007. He then completed postgraduate studies with legendary Finnish conductor Jorma Panula at Stockholm's Royal College of Music, joining a lineage of the 20th and 21st centuries' finest conductors.
His career quickly gained international momentum after winning the Lovro von Matačić Competition in Zagreb, the Grand Prize at the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Conducting Competition in Katowice, and Second Prize at the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Competition in Frankfurt.
In 2010, Tzigane was named Chief Conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, becoming the youngest chief conductor in Germany at the time. During his tenure, he led over 140 concerts across Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and North America, significantly expanding the orchestra’s repertoire and international profile. Concurrently, he served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Filharmonia Pomorska in Poland from 2009 to 2013.
In 2023, he assumed leadership of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director. His programming in Kuopio has earned critical acclaim for its "curatorial boldness" and "arresting emotional depth" (*Savon Sanomat*), championing neglected repertoire alongside the masterworks of the canon. Continuing his deep engagement with the orchestra, he stepped into the role of First Conductor in Autumn 2025 to undertake a landmark Brahms symphonic cycle, which is inspired by the elastic and expressive conducting and music making styles of Brahms and his favorite conductors, Fritz Steinbach and Arthur Nikisch.
Equally at home in the opera house, Tzigane made his operatic debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich with *Così fan tutte*. He has since conducted acclaimed productions at the Hamburg State Opera, Oper Frankfurt, and the Royal Swedish Opera, including *Die Zauberflöte*, *Die Fledermaus*, and *Carmen*. His operatic style is frequently noted for its dramatic and theatrical pacing, fusing the composer's intentions with those of the stage director, while remaining sensitive and open to the singers.
Tzigane’s symphonic repertoire spans from the Baroque to the present day. While he holds a particular affinity for late Romantic and early 20th-century music, he is a dedicated advocate for underrepresented composers and contemporary voices, featuring works by Josef Labor, Viteslava Kaprálová, Dora Pejačević, and contemporary/(living) Finnish and French composers, invoicing Kalevi Aho, Sebastian Fagerlund, and Guillaume Connesson.
He has conducted leading orchestras across five continents, including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Bruckner Orchester Linz, Staatskapelle Weimar, Tonkünstler Orchester Wien, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National D'Île de France, the PFK Filharmonia Prague, Prague Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.
Future engagements showcase Tzigane's growing global presence. He will lead a major 10-concert tour of Japan with the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France in July 2026, and his upcoming schedule features highly anticipated debuts with the symphony orchestras of Gunma, Sapporo, Osaka, New Century Japan, and the Aichi Chamber Orchestra. This autumn, he will also make his Japanese operatic debut with the Nikikai Opera Foundation in a production of *Carmen*. He will return for several projects over the next seasons to the Silesian Philharmonic, a longstanding relationship that stretches back to the Fitelberg Competition in 2007. He will also make his Canadian debut with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and is a candidate for Music Director.
